Europe is a producer of cigars, mainly small, dry-cured cigars that are in tune with the European taste. For example in Madrid, Spain, we have one of the most popular cigar places called the Cava de Magallanes. Most of the cigars in Europe are wrapped in Europe but the tobacco can come from anywhere else in the world, like Nicaragua, Cuba and even Indonesia.
Dry-cured cigars are really good because they hold their quality at room temperature and do not need humidification. For this reason, they are often sold in cardboard boxes or metal tins of about 5 to 10 pieces. They do offer a quick smoke and are easy to carry around.
The production and sale of European cigars is regulated by the ECMA (European Cigar Manufacturers Association) which was founded in the early 1990s. It is the official representative body of the European manufacturers of cigars. They represent manufacturers from Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, Spain and Switzerland. The ECMA members account for over 90% of the cigars made in the European Union and ensure that the quality of the cigars and cigarillos are up to standard.
