Limited Edition Cigars
Every year since the year 2000, a super-premium selection of cigars is released into the market by Habanos S.A. in Cuba.
This exceptional list of cigars is referred to as Ediciones Limitadas or Limited Editions.
History of Ediciones Limitadas
Since the year 2000 with the exception of 2002, special one-of-a-kind smokes grace the market every year. In 2000, there were four Limited Editions to begin with. Since then, there have been fluctuations of three to five cigars released every year.
Originally, only five of the most prestigious Havana brands would release a Limited Edition cigar. These were Romeo y Julieta, Partagas, Cohiba, Montecristo, and Hoyo de Monterrey. In 2015, six more brands joined the group of Limited Edition makers. They are Cuaba, Trinidad, H.Upmann, Bolivar, Ramon Allones, and Punch.
Characteristics of Limited Edition Cigars
Limited Edition cigars are widely counterfeited. Some people come up with Limited Editions that were never on the list to begin with.
So, what are the attributes of a Limited Edition cigar?
For starters, Limited Edition cigars must be made by one of the above mentioned cigar makers.
Secondly, every Limited Edition cigar must come in a rare size not usually included in the regular production.
Thirdly, only rare tobacco, extra aged blends, and dark coloured wrappers are to be incorporated in the making.
And finally, every Limited Edition cigar must be released for a limited period usually within the year of release. The year of release is indicated on the second band.
No one can really tell how many Limited Edition cigars are made since the manufacturers must wait until their tobacco is ready and graded to begin rolling these treasures.
Are all Limited Editions Maduros?
When most of us hear of dark wrappers, we automatically think of Maduro.
Although most of the Limited Edition cigars are indeed Maduros, not all are.
The truth is, the wrappers used here are young and thick top primings of shade-grown leaves with loads of oils and sugar. So, it makes sense that they take longer to ferment and mature.
For instance, the same ageing process that would take a month for a normal wrapper will take 9 months for this kind of leaf. As a result, all Limited Edition wrappers are aged for at least 2 years.
Ultimately, all Limited Edition cigars have a dark wrapper. The difference in wrappers depends on the kind of tobacco used. Some cigars are rolled in the Colorado which is dark tan, others are rolled in the Colorado Maduro which is very dark brown while others have on the Maduro which is nearly black.
As for the fillers and binder, Ediciones Limitadas before 2007 had fillers and binders that were aged like all normal cigars. However, after 2007, the fillers and binder have been aged some more. This is to create a harmonious, balanced experience by making sure every component of the cigar is aged at least two years before rolling.
Unique Vitolas Featured on Limited Editions?
From Limited Edition cigars, we have experienced incredible never before used vitolas. Worth mentioning are the Sublimes (61/2”x 54 ring gauge) first seen on the 2004 Cohiba. There’s also Duke (51/2” x 54 ring gauge) created for the 2009 Romeo.
Sometimes the Limited Editions feature long-forgotten vitolas. For example, this 63/4” x 50 ring gauge used on the 2006 Partagas Serie D No. 1 which hadn’t been in use since the 1950s.
Some amazing limited edition cigars include:
